Our baby was in the NICU for a week before we took him home. There were people constantly going in and out of his room, machines beeping, a sound machine playing rain sounds and there were lights from the hall and machines lighting up the room at all times.
For that reason, our LO doesn’t get bothered by noise we make in the house. We stopped using a sound machine, which seems to be okay. We do have a fan running in the room though, which creates white noise. My question is about the light in the room. He would fuss when we had a dark room, so we put in a relatively bright nightlight and it seemed to calm him down. It also helps us see him, which I like. Will this cause issues down the road though?

nope! At least not with us. My first was in the nicu for 6 weeks. We kept a nightlight on in the room when we brought him home. Used that probably until he was around 4-5 months old when he started to become more aware. Then we kept it dark in there and he did better with that. And then around the time he turned 2 it started to seem like he was afraid of the dark so we leave the nightlight on his hatch in his room on all night and it works great for him.

I feel like all babies are different. My first did well with a night light but my second always slept better in the pitch dark. Of course I didn’t start doing the dark until she was in her own room. I always leave a night light on when they are in the bedside bassinet in my room so I can quickly see them.

No we keep either a nightlight or a little galaxy star projector on so we can see baby easily at night! Honestly I think this has helped my toddler in the long run because we can go wherever and he can sleep if there’s light coming through the blinds etc, we don’t have to worry about black out curtains or anything!

I leave our master bathroom light on and mostly close the door, it provides good dim lighting

Thanks all! This makes me feel a lot better. I wanted to fix it earlier than later if it was going to be a cause for concern!

We have a night light/sound machine that we leave in so we can find our way around. We have a Hatch and a Nanit. Both allow you to select which color light you want on, how bright, etc. And we can customize programs so we can make it brighter with just a tap when we go in to change baby and feed them.
