lot of similarities to yesterday for sure. redwood city, alameda, concord and fairfield. the each at 61 right now compared to yesterday were a little bit cooler in the north bay. not much of a difference, though. afternoon highs will mostly be 70's to 80's. only a couple of low 90's and the rest of the weekend actually gets even cooler, which i'll tell you all about. still ahead, back to rain. all right. on the eve of with a look at your morning commute, a bridge right now about 60 minutes traveling into the city, mateo bridge just short of 14 year to summer, filled out 8 and the golden gate. 37 of its host. 28 minutes. well, 801. let's get to what's happening today. the community coming together to honor the life of fallen san jose community service officer long pham. yeah, he was struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver. >> while he was directing traffic, this happened earlier this month over michael thomas is live in san jose with more on that. good morning, michael. >> a summer morning here in the south bay with dozens of san jose police officers

preparing here at sapd for this funeral service of one of their own. you can see behind me the fire department along with police officers trying to secure the area and also just really prepare the person that they are honoring today is a community service officer that worked at the department for years. was long pham and we've got a photo of him on your screen. he passed away earlier this month. he was struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver while directing traffic during the overnight hours. funeral services are set to start at around 11 o'clock this morning at the sapd center in san jose, there will be a procession with san jose police and other law enforcement and also the fire department will bring the camera back out here live. this is at the corner of obama boulevard and santa clara street. at some point, this street, santa clara street will be closed off as they will be putting up the flag here with the fire department and the procession is set to begin at some point during the 10 o'clock hour or so. we'll be out here live for the morning to bring you that

latest coverage in his memory. that's the very latest here in san jose on michael thomas skews me rain. and james, i'll send it back to okay, michael, thank you very much. >> also learning more about the 2 people that were killed in a wrong-way crash in san jose. the truck hit a tesla killing 14 year-old charlie wilson and his mom. 47 you over that. paulson. his father says the teen was a freshman recently started some in tahoe high school. investigators say that wrong-way drivers from florida. he was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, not said if he's facing any charges. and another big story following. the person killed yesterday's big rig crash in the north bay was a longtime teacher cardinal newman high school in santa rosa, former principal at cardinal newman and from across for the person killed was pat lafleur tune, robert and totter cardinal newman from 73 to 2019. he also serve as a coach or very sports, including track field cross country, baseball and football. the school's track is actually named in honor of

him lafleur tunes. former colleague said he is shocked and sad to hear what happened to his friend. yesterday's deadly crash happened around noon. this is on westbound highway 12 in santa rosa. police say the big rig did not stop as it was approaching the intersection of fulton and created a chain reaction. these pieces, 11 cars were involved. one of them a pickup truck catching fire. 9 other people had to be taken to the hospital injuries ranging from minor to moderate. the cause is still being investigated. >> wilbert lee police are now investigating a hate crime after a family-run coffee shop was vandalized 4 times in just one montha coffee shop is inspired by their palestinian american roots. kron 4 sarah stinson got a chance to talk to the owners there. >> the vandalism was caught on video. you can see it here behind me. the owners of java coffee roasters say this is the same vandal has been targeting their free palestine sign. inspired by their palestinian roots and love for fresh brew a 3 brothers from

the north bay quit their 9 to 5 jobs. >> to open a coffee shop in berkeley. joffe a coffee roasters opened their doors in june on university avenue and here maggi nor and their brother sami gath roast their own coffee beans, fake their own pastries and make each cup and experience. they say they poured their heart and soul into their business and it's been a dream come up until a vandal deface their free palestine sign in the front window. this is happened 4 times. yes, by the same person. it was the 4th time that pushed them to reported after the person crossed out palestine and wrote free here. a lot of the community members themselves said like you have report this time, it's something that we actually agreed with. >> when you write free here and there's kids walking by, there's religious institutions and schools all around us. >> and that's just completely completely unacceptable. berkley police are investigating this as a hate crime. this is not going to stop us from serving coffee

from. >> being an existing as palestinians and believing in the free palestine. this is personal for these brothers. their parents immigrated from palestine more than 40 years ago and started a new chapter in napa. and our parents are everything to us. and so they've been the number one supporters for be and us dealing with this hate crime or just sort of opening doors. we have about 2000 family members back in the west bank, an old city in jerusalem. they live under occupation with minimal rights. maggi says overall since opening they've had a lot more support than hate who are just general fans of are. >> coffee selection and just the way we treat people with love and care. and so for this to happen, yes, it's unfortunately a roadblock are sort of a temporary staying, but it definitely is outweighed by the outpouring of love from our community. >> berkley police are still investigating this. the owners are confident the vandal will be caught. may look forward to many more years serving up their unique blends of coffee.

i'm sara stinson reporting back to you. >> it 7 is the time. thank you, sara. in the north bay, a man now has been arrested after threatening to shoot students as they were walking to school. police say this happened tuesday morning, right near grange, middle school officers say the man was driving a car and pulled up to 4 students and made these threats. unclear if the kids knew who this person was. but in the end, that person was arrested and booked into solano county jail. there you see thousands of hotel workers across the bay area. they could soon be walking off the job. the possible strike comes after months of failed negotiations with hyatt and hilton hotels. yesterday, a large group of workers have this informational picket outside the hotels in san francisco. workers say they want better wages and benefits and most of all, they want consistent working hours. >> don't have enough job. let

the sweet we do have a i only want they. 2 they those they obey d. i hope i when hour. >> yeah. the workers contract expired back on august 14th. they didn't say exactly when they'll go on strike. they'd only say it could happen any day. >> overdose deaths are down year-over-year in santa clara county. the public health department announcing yesterday a new website to keep that run going. federal government awarding santa clara more than 11 million dollars over 5 years to enhance overdose prevention efforts. some of those funds were used to launch this new web site that right at the top offers, quick access to naloxone, also known as narcan to reverse an overdose. >> and that means we need to have naloxone out there in the community with family members, loved ones, friends of people who might use drugs. so that at the moment, overdose, that reversal can happen in a life can be saved. >> the new website offers everything from post over. do

speaking getting around in the south bay, tens of thousands of cars traveling on the de la cruz overpass along highway 101 in santa clara. they'll now be able to have an easier trip with the newly completed and wider over pass an interchange vta is unveiling the new overpass today. those that wider highway will have a traffic lanes along with some bike and pedestrian paths as well. the opening event begins at 10, 30 this morning. all right. a lot of folks going to be out there traveling. john a commute tonight because the weather's ne. i it's probably not much of an actual wording to but lot of people already have the day off tahoe 80's going to be is related speaking of babies. 80's, i know great. that's what we've got today. you know, not a lot of 90's. we've got to hang out. i was open that we would all be out of the 80's today. but any vacaville you're still there. but tomorrow and saturday, sunday will be even cooler. >> you're look outside. lots of cloud cover above the bay

area this morning. there's a lot of similarities between today and yesterday. one of those being all that cloud cover you're seeing from the south bay, north bay into the inland east bay low still sits to the west versus most close to us towards the late part of the weekend into labor day itself. exits very quickly, though, and with the resurgence of high pressure, temperatures are going to skyrocket into tuesday of next week. so this is a nice break from that summer heat just in time for labor day weekend. that's low 70's and 80's indeed. futurecast shows a lot of create gray skies overhead during the morning afternoon. sunshine for everyone. but the immediate coastline, another push of that low gray into the start of the day tomorrow. and with that some mist and drizzle specially during morning hours both saturday and sunday. mornings. so don't be deterred by that. still plan out your afternoon activities that we do have those great mornings in this forecast. temperatures in the 60's to 70's in the city 60's right along the coast. those 70's to 80's elsewhere in a

would impact more than 350,000 policyholders state. come november. some customers are going to face premium increases of up to 650%. others might see their rates drop by as much as 57. the company's latest price hike comes amid a broader insurance problem across our state. some companies, including all state, stopped accepting new property insurance applications altogether. last year. well, federal prosecutors have once again charge the owner of several towing companies in san francisco with insurance fraud. >> earlier this month, the fbi raided the offices of specialty towing. now at the time prosecutors charge the owner, jose. but with mail fraud, wire fraud and money laundering in connection with the insurance scam. now prosecutors say he tried to defraud another insurance company by staging a multi-vehicle crash in san mateo county. they said he put 4 damaged vehicles onto a vehicle carrier and then drove the whole thing off the road.

earlier this year, san francisco city attorney david chiu band the deo's companies from receiving city contracts because they had been illegally towing cars in the city. the deal will be arraigned in this new case at 10, 30 this morning. >> social media company, formerly known as twitter. they're going to shut down their sandwich to school headquarters in about 2 weeks. according to a report by fortune, the company send a note to staff yesterday. now to the headquarters. they're going to close for good on september. 13th. well, as of headquarters on market street is long served as the social media company's global headquarters. back in july, you might remember elon musk announced he would move the company to austin, texas. and if you are going to be a lot of traffic ticket court, any hearing starting in october, all of those are going to the civic center courthouse. cornell says on mcallister street right next to chase bank. the move from the hall of justice to the civic center courthouse comes after 70 misdemeanor cases recently dismissed because they had gone past their deadline of trial. zoom hearings can also

blocked president biden's student debt relief plan. the program known as the safe plan has been paused for months after more than a dozen gop led states filed lawsuits last year. the supreme court struck down biden's first attempt at forgiving student loan debt. however, the current plan lowers payments to 5% of a borrower's income. the white house says it will continue to fight to remove billions in student loan debt. >> so what, what, 4 more years look like? it looked like affordable health care for every american looks like more student loan forgiveness. obviously the power of the purse lies with the congress and not with the presidency. >> well, for now, the fate of the safe plan is back with the lower courts. however, experts say it's likely to be back at the supreme court down the road. we're going to take a break or 22 coming up on the kron 4 morning news. a bridge in san leandro hit hard by last year's storms is finally being rebuilt. but there are some obstacles to the project will talk about that in a moment.

pounds in cannabis plant. >> though the burglaries took place across the state, including stores in sonoma, santa cruz and monterey counties. more than half of the 22 arrested are gang members from the city of oakland. this. >> a criminal enterprise, if you will, in comes the number of games, chemistry games that we saw working in collaboration in order to commit these crimes. >> the oakland police department cease fire unit worked alongside the california department of justice and the santa cruz county sheriff's office during the 5 month investigation. and oakland police say the take down resulted in more than just pot. there were a number of weapons that were recovered at least 17 on the day of the take now. so we know that these individuals >> involved in weapons, possessions, weapons trafficking. there are some that have ties to thefts, carjackings, and even a felonious assaults which include shootings. >> authorities say most of the

burglaries took place at night and the pot gummies. edibles implant stolen ended up being resold. those arrested now face commercial burglary, grand theft, organized retail, theft and conspiracy charges. dan kerman kron, 4 news. >> although thp says a person has died in a two-car crash. the 7 last night around 11, 30 on 5.80, right near 16 avenue. on-ramp. there's only one person died and one of the cars involved. hasn't released any additional information on this crash. houghton fremont police are saying and motorcyclist is dead following a crash this happened on wednesday at about 06:00pm in the city's grimmer neighborhood on osgood. police say the rider was driving south when a car driving north made a left turn crashing with that motorcycle. this is not fremont. 6 fatal crash of the year. the driver did remain on the scene. >> also in the east bay, a man's been arrested now in connection with a hit and run of a 9 month old in berkeley. the crash happened monday when a baby girl was being pushed

across the street in a stroller. now we're told she has several broken bones and a head injury. she is recovering at home with her parents. police say they did arrest luis menus, sanchez or munoz sanchez wednesday after recognizing his car. >> well, a san francisco restaurant owner now speaking out after his business in the castro district was broken into again yet. so these thieves have gotten in 8 times now in the past few years, kron four's gayle ong has more on their story. >> overnight, security cameras at guy chicken and rice capturing a man breaking and entering the restaurant. >> they just kick through 8. through through it and then find through this owner kevin lewis showing us the aftermath at 03:00am in the morning. like you're in deep sleep, you're in a very comfortable state. and that's just the shock of like, oh, my god, what's going on? is it just a

what has happened like and you have to like run down here to store to see what's going on. according to san francisco police officers arrived around 3.40 thursday morning. no suspect was found. the restaurant is located on 16th street near sanchez street in the castro district. kron. 4 has interviewed lou over the years about multiple break-ins. >> at least 8 incidents and counting since the business opened 6 years ago. i follow the news and i see that's happening to other businesses out there. >> it it's scary to think like, it's it's my experience is real. >> and i'm not the only one crime data from the san francisco police department shows the mission street station which covers this neighborhood shows burglaries are up by 15% since january. 1st, citywide crime is overall down. crime might be low are based on some some stats. but >> it's still here, at least from my personal experience. and it's very hard to deal loose as the cost to repair these windows are around $2000

well, there's a new technology. >> that is actually being used to tackle break-ins from the san francisco police department. so the technology consisted use a license plate readers paired along with bait cars and plainclothes officers. sanders is a police say break-ins of dropped 57% compared to this time last year as of pd sfpd, they've created a page on their website where it will post most current policy on drone use along with monthly flight logs. okay, to look at this program actually in action. this is in san francisco. police troll capturing burglars breaking into an suv in a parking lot on the embarcadero. happened last week. you see that the use taking luggage of the car, the drone following them and police eventually setting out spikes. stop 3 suspected tease. they were all arrested and they actually had guns on them. and that luggage that was stolen was returned to the owners. >> the california legislature has approved a bill now that will create more living spaces in downtown san francisco. so

this bill would provide tax incentives that would encourage transforming these empty office spaces into housing. supporters say this could create an additional 14,000 homes in san francisco and would also create more jobs to in the construction field. the governor has until september 30th to decide if he's going to sign that bill. >> and the east bay replacement project finally underway in san leandro after a pedestrian bridge collapsed during a storm. it happened about a year and a half ago kron four's. philippe recall brings us up to speed. >> in the past contractors in san leandro demolished and have been removing whats left of the pedestrian bridge that once connected to neighborhoods at cary drive and haas avenue. took a long time. we were really getting anxious about this since march of last year when at least one large eucalyptus tree landed on the nearly 60 year-old structure, the project to replace the bridge languished in permit purgatory.
