Packers training camp Day 3 highlights, schedule, Jordan Love contract news, Eric Stokes and defense dominate: Recap (2024)

The Green Bay Packers again didn't have Jordan Love on the field for the third day of training camp.

And the Packers defense took full advantage.

Cornerback Eric Stokes was the MVP of the defense on Wednesday, securing multiple interceptions and making plays all over the field. Stokes' perfromance was one of the many highlights from Packers training camp.

Packers training camp schedule

The Packers are off on Thursday before returning to the field for their fourth training camp practice of the week on Friday. They'll also practice on Saturday and Sunday.

The practices at Ray Nitschke Field, on Armed Forces Drive, east of the Don Hutson Center, are free and open to fans.

All practices begin at 10:30 a.m.

Packers defense dominates again, training camp over for day

Packers training camp ends just before 12:15 p.m.

The 1 hour, 45 minute practice was dominated by the defense.

And for the second straight day, the offense, who were without Jordan Love again, had to do push-ups because it got outplayed by the defense.

While it's not a positive sign for the offense, especially the backup QBs, first-year defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley has to like what he's seeing so far from his unit.

Dontayvion Wicks plays part of defensive back after another bad pass from Sean Clifford

Second-year wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks had to play defensive back on a Sean Clifford overthrow, breaking up a Jaire Alexander interception on the left sideline.

Wicks has been involved in a lot of picks/near picks today.

Josh Myers with a big block for AJ Dillon

Packers center Josh Myers just showed why he's so effective on the offensive line.

He had a really good pull block on a perimeter run for AJ Dillon, sealing off the edge. That’s what Myers does well, great mobility for a big center.

Packers quarterbacks struggling mightily without Jordan Love

Perhaps the packers should give Jordan Love whatever he wants.

Based on the pathetic performance of the offense, they need to get him on the field ASAP.

With Love on the sideline in a practice holdout, the offense threw four interceptions and could barely gain a yard on first down.

Sean Clifford, the team's fifth-round pick in 2023 out of Penn State, there two of them, twice throwing inaccurate passes that led to the ball getting picked.

His first was a rainbow to deep to Samori Toure that hung up so long safety Evan Williams was able to outjump everyone for his second interception of camp.

Clifford also threw behind Dontayvion Wicks on a slant. Wicks had the ball and should have put it away quicker but because it was thrown behind him, cornerback Eric Stokes was able to rip it away.

Quarterback Jacob Eason, signed by the team on Tuesday, threw an interception but it was on one of the better throws. The ball caromed off receiver Jalen Wayn’s hands.

Safety Benny Sapp and Anthony Johnson Jr. also had picks.

During a first down run drill, the defense dominated and didn’t give up a yard on the first five of six runs.

Eric Stokes is all gas during Packers training camp

The Packers defense is making all kinds of plays today.

Eric Stokes, who has battled injuries throughout his career, is at the center of it. The Packers' former first-round pick is showing his speed and aggressiveness.

Stokes had great coverage alone down the right sideline against Christian Watson. Sean Clifford threw it up for Watson, but Stokes ran with him step for step downfield, and had the leverage to seal him off against the sideline.It's a snapshot of why Stokes has so much potential.

A couple reps later, Stokes caught a drop off Dontayvion Wicks’ hands to intercept a Sean Clifford pass. It was another good finish from Stokes snagging the deflection before the ball hit the ground.

And even though he had a defensive pass interference against Christian Watson it came on a Sean Clifford underthrow a deep ball on the left sideline. Clifford hung it up in the air too long, and Stokes trucked him as Watson waited for it.

Stokes wasn't done. He had another great play, jumping a Sean Clifford pass to Christian Watson for an interception on the No. 1 offense's final series. It would've been a pick 6. It was Stokes’ second interception today. He’s balling right now.

Stokes is still just 25 years old.

Packers rookie Evan Williams has second interception of training camp

Evan Williams is making an early impression during training camp.

The Packers rookie safety had his second pick of camp, winning a Sean Clifford jump ball in the end zone over Dontayvion Wicks. It was a good finish on the play deep downfield from Williams.

Williams, a fourth round pick, also had an interception on Tuesday. At Oregon last year, he led the team with 82 tackles and tied for second in the FBS among defensive backs with 4½ sacks.

Anthony Johnson Jr. makes an interception on new quarterback Jacob Eason

Anthony Johnson Jr. made an interception on Jacob Eason. It certainly wasn't Eason’s fault, though. He put it on the money to wide receiver Jalen Wayne down the middle, but the pass tipped off Wayne’s hands.

Who is Jacob Eason?

The Packers signed Eason on Tuesday. Eason is a former fourth-round draft pick out of Washington.

Head coach Matt LaFleur said before practice today that Eason, who spent time on the New York Giants' practice squad in 2023, could potentially stick around during camp if he plays well. This will essentially be an extended tryout for the 26-year-old.

LaFleur said he is familiar with Eason. He recruited him when he was the quarterbacks coach at Notre Dame in 2014. Eason played the first two years of his college career at Georgia in 2016 and 2017. The Packers signed Eason so they don't overextend the two young QBs (Sean Clifford and Michael Pratt) while Jordan Love is out during contract negotiations

New Packers left tackle Andre Dillard getting second-team reps

Andre Dillard, who spent last season with the Tennessee Titans, is getting second-team reps at left tackle. He’d been getting first-team reps at right tackle, but that’s Zach Tom’s spot when he returns to team reps.

The Packers appear to be cross training Dillard for potential depth.

The Packers signed Dillard in April. Dillard is a former first round pick out of Washington State. He spent the first four years of his NFL career with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Packers first team offensive line today

With Packers starting guard Elgton Jenkins getting a rest day, here is the first team offensive line: Rasheed Walker, Sean Rhyan, Josh Myers, Jordan Morgan and Kadeem Telfort.It's an opportunity for the rookie Morgan (first round pick) to stand out to the coaches.

Here's a look at wide receiver Jayden Reed, who returned to practice on Wednesday after missing Tuesday.

Packers new linebackers coach Anthony Campanile runs through drill for players

NFL coaches like to participate in drills as well. After all, they've been through this before, often as a player themselves.

Linebackers coach/running game coordinator Anthony Campanile was playing running back for the inside linebackers during a run drill. Campanile played safety and linebacker at Rutgers in the early 2000s.

Campanile is in his first year with the Packers. He joined the Packers coaching staff in the offseason after four seasons coaching linebackers for the Miami Dolphins.

The Packers defense is switching to a 4-3 base in 2024.

When is Packers training camp today?

Training camp begins at 10:30 a.m. Practice will likely go for about two hours.

Is Jordan Love at Packers training camp?

The Packers quarterback is in attendance again but won't practice until he has a contract extension.

A new deal hasn't been announced as of the Packers' start time for practice on Wednesday.

Love has been on the field the first two days of training camp, even amid the heavy rain on Tuesday, but hasn't practiced. He was chatting with veteran teammate Elgton Jenkins on the field Wednesday. Jenkins is also not practicing.

Love, who is entering his second year in 2024 as the team's starting quarterback, is due to become one of the highest paid players in the NFL. The Packers and Love's team have been working on an extension throughout the offseason.

Elgton Jenkins not practicing today

Packers guard Elgton Jenkins is not practicing Wednesday. He doesn't have any injury and it's just a veteran rest day for him early in camp.

Jenkins, 28, is entering his sixth NFL season, all with the Packers in 2024.

The former second-round pick signed a four-year, $64 million extension in December 2022. At the time the $17 million annually was the second highest for an NFL guard.

Jayden Reed returning to training camp, nurses non-football toe injury

Packers second-year wide receiver Jayden Reed will return to the field Wednesday after missing practice on Tuesday from the non-football injury list.

Reporter Ryan Wood noted Reed had a toe injury that came away from the field.

He was working with the punt return team early in practice.

Reed is coming off a fantastic rookie season in which he hauled in 64 receptions for 793 yards and eight touchdowns. Wood says Reed is likely limited to individual drills.

When are Packers roster cuts?

The 2024 Packers training camp just began so we're a far off from when the team has to get down to its 53-man roster.

But the jockeying for position is well underway.

The Packers roster (active/inactive list) must be at 53 players by 3 p.m. Central Aug. 27.
