The Ultimate Fairfax Rec Center Guide - Virginia Vacation Guide (2024)

Fairfax County in Northern Virginia has many excellent park and recreation facilities located throughout the county. I have been a member of the Fairfax County Park Authority Rec Centers (as they’re officially called), since I was a teenager.

I first started using the Rec Centers back when I was probably about 5 or 6 years old, when I was taking my first swim lessons. I want to provide you with an ultimate guide to Fairfax Rec Center facilities in Fairfax County, VA, including information on amenities, locations, prices, and more.

The Fairfax County Rec Centers provide high-quality and affordable fitness rooms, gyms, exercise classes, pools, hot tubs, saunas, basketball courts, volleyball courts, racquetball courts, wallyball courts, handball courts, squash courts, tennis courts, athletic fields (for soccer, football, baseball, and more), ice skating, and many more activities.

If you are interested in any of these things, then I highly recommend that you learn more about the amenities available.

The Rec Centers can provide affordable ways to relax, move, and exercise on weekends, as part of a staycation, and to participate in different activities for the whole family. The Rec Centers provide many facilities and classes for everyone ranging from young children to every age of adults.

I have personally been to most of the Rec Centers in this guide, and I use many of them on a very regular basis for swimming, exercise classes, hot tub, sauna, and more.

This guide will give you all the information you need to know more about the Fairfax Rec Centers.

Where are the Fairfax County Rec Centers?

What are the Fairfax County Rec Centers?

The Fairfax County Rec Centers are a collection of nine facilities located throughout Fairfax County in Northern Virginia. They are part of the Fairfax County Park Authority, and are partly funded by taxpayer dollars. As a result, the Rec Center prices and memberships are discounted for Fairfax County residents, though they can be used on either a drop-in or membership basis by anyone.

If you have a membership, you can go to all nine facilities as part of your membership.

The nine facilities that make up the Rec Centers are:

Each of the facilities above share a lot of similarities. All of the above Rec Centers offer the following:

  • Indoor swimming pools
  • Locker rooms and lockers
  • Fitness Room (including weights, weight machines, treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bikes, rowing machines, and other exercise equipment

However, please note that each of the Rec Centers has a lot of differences too, which I’ll highlight in the section below. Each Rec Center has different hours and other different amenities (for instance, Mount Vernon is the only facility with an ice skating rink.)

Also, the Rec Centers frequently have sales on their membership prices. They often occur around the November-December timeframe for the holidays, and have also occurred around January and February, as well as in the Spring around May. These sales windows have changed in recent years due to the pandemic. You can either refer to the website for the most current information, or call any of the Rec Centers to learn about the timing of membership sales.

Swimming Pools:

I wanted to give a little more information about the swimming pools at the Rec Centers. I love to swim, and I have used them for many many years. In fact, I learned how to swim at the Rec Centers when I was just about 6 years old, and it’s a skill and passion that I’ve carried with me for decades since then.

The indoor pools are generally either 25 meters by 25 meters in size (half Olympic-sized), or 50 meters by 50 meters (or full Olympic-sized). Audrey Moore, Oak Marr, and Franconia all have the larger 50-meter pools, while all of the other Rec Centers have the smaller 25-meter pools.

The pools are generally all split between a shallow, open end, which is commonly used by young children, including babies, parents teaching their kids to swim, playing, and some classes. Then, the middle section of the pool consists of about 8-14 lanes that are used for lap swimming. They are also often used by swim teams for practice and swim classes. Then, the other end of the pool features the deep end with the diving area, which includes up to four diving boards (some low diving boards, and some high dive boards. The diving boards are often open and free for use by the general public, but they are sometimes closed for diving practice, lifeguard training, or other activities.

The swimming pool areas also include a hot tub/spa, which is a great feature for relaxing, reading, or physical therapy. I work out a lot, and the hot tub, especially the jets, are a great way to relax sore muscles in your back, feet, legs, and arms. Every Rec Center has a hot tub, with the exception of Audrey Moore, which does not have any hot tub. Franconia Rec Center has the biggest and best hot tub (it has a total capacity of about 30 individuals!) Providence has the second biggest hot tub. Most of the others have hot tubs that accommodate about 15 people at once, though they are often only occupied by a few people at any given time.

Some times tend to be busier at the pool than others. In general, early morning and up to about 3:30pm on weekdays is a pretty free time to go swimming without too many crowds or lane closures due to classes and teams. Most pools are closed from 3:30pm to 5:45pm every Monday through Friday for swim team practices during the Fall through Spring months. The pool is open to the public, but generally very very busy from 5:45pm to about 7:30pm Monday through Friday. The best time to swim at nights is generally as late as possible on a weekday, from about 7:30pm till closing time at 9pm. The weekends are generally a much more free time to use the pool, though occasionally a pool will be closed Saturday, Sunday or both days due to a Swim Meet.

Each Rec Center posts a pool calendar each month, and I recommend referring to that as a guide for what days and times are the most free, and at which Rec Center. I’m not a fan of big crowds and struggling to find a free lane, and so I often rotate among different Rec Centers on a regular basis to go to the center that has the best availability at any given time.

Franconia tends to be one of my favorite pools to go to, because it is among the largest, but generally has fewer swim teams and classes compared to Audrey Moore and Oak Marr. It also tends to have fewer patrons swimming laps, and so the lanes that are free for the general public are generally less likely to be in use. It also has the nicest hot tub out of the all of the Rec Centers.

South Run, in my experience tends to be one of the most crowded of all the pools. It is smaller than some of the others, and has a lot of teams, classes, and patrons all vying for space. I once went to swim there and it was so crowded that I had to swim four to a lane. That got to be so chaotic that I stopped going there as much after that.

Mount Vernon and George Washington are smaller pools, but generally tend to be less crowded, particularly at certain times and days.

The Rec Centers calendars change every month. I recommend googling “Rec Center pool calendar or pool schedule” to get the most recent calendar. For instance, you can google “Franconia Rec Center Pool Calendar or Pool Schedule” to get the latest schedule for Franconia.

For each of the pool schedules, there is a calendar showing the high level schedule every day. This calendar will show if the pool is closed any days or times due to a swim meet (which occasionally occur on weekends). It will also show if the pool is closed or has modified hours holidays. Generally all of the Rec Centers are closed on Christmas Day New Years Day, and close early on certain other holidays (Independence Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, New Years Eve.) George Washington Rec Center is generally closed completely on these holidays.

If you scroll down below the calendar, you will find more detailed lap lane schedules by day of the week. This will show you exactly which lanes at each Rec Center are available at any given time.

Fitness Centers:

The Ultimate Fairfax Rec Center Guide - Virginia Vacation Guide (2)

The fitness centers at each of the Rec Centers generally have similar equipment, which includes a lot of the major cardio machines, weight machines, free weights, weight racks, plus other equipment like stability balls, sliders, yoga mats, Pilates rings, foam rollers and more.

Some Fitness Centers are larger and have more machines, equipment, and generally more space for spreading out. South Run and Oak Marr probably have the two largest Fitness Centers. Both span two levels. The South Run fitness center is especially nice with a wall of windows that cover both levels. George Washington probably has the smallest fitness center.

Below is a list of the equipment available at most Rec Centers:

  • Treadmills
  • Ellipticals
  • Rowing Machines
  • Spin Bikes
  • Stationary Bikes
  • Weight Machines covering just about every major muscle group (leg press, bicep curls, etc.)
  • Free weights
  • Kettlebells
  • Weight Racks with barbells
  • Yoga Mats
  • Stability Balls
  • Foam Rollers
  • Pilates Rings
  • Jump Ropes

Locker Rooms:

Each of the Rec Centers include men’s and women’s locker rooms, as well as a separate family bathroom for single, private use. The locker rooms include bathroom stalls, sinks, lockers (which can be used by paying either $0.25 for the smaller lockers, or $0.50 for the larger lockers.) Make sure you bring quarters to use the lockers and lock up your belongings. You can get change if needed at the front desk too. There are also showers, changing rooms, and a sauna, which is an awesome and very relaxing bonus.

Fairfax CountyRec Centers:

Audrey Moore Rec Center:

The Audrey Moore Rec Center (which was formerly the Wakefield Rec Center, and so you may see it occasionally referred to by that name as well) is one of my favorite Rec Centers to go to. Highlights include a full Olympic size indoor pool for lap swimming; a large fitness center with cardio machines, weight machines, free weights, and more; an outdoor skate park for skate boarders (this is very popular); and nearby extensive bicycle trails that run for miles as part of the Gerry Connolly Cross County Trail.

Location:

8100 Braddock Road, Annandale, VA, 22003

Hours:

Monday – Friday = 5am – 9pm (Pool = 6:30am – 9pm)

Saturday = 7am – 6pm (Pool = 9am – 6pm)

Sunday = 8am – 6pm (Pool = 9am – 6pm)

Amenities:

  • 50 Meter Indoor Swimming Pool
  • Gymnasium
  • Basketball Court
  • Fitness Center
  • Spin Cycle Studio
  • Saunas
  • Locker Rooms
  • Outdoor Skate Park
  • Tennis Courts
  • Athletic Fields

Staycation/Vacation Activities:

You can go for a bicycle ride from the Audrey Moore parking lot, which connects with the excellent Gerry Connolly Cross County Trail. There is also a seasonal farmer’s market in one of the parking lots every Wednesday from 2pm to 6pm, generally from May until November. The indoor pool also features ample space to play and relax. There are also Tennis Courts on the grounds.

Pros:

  • Huge 50 meter pool, with a beautiful underwater sea mural decorating the walls.
  • Nearby bicycle trails
  • Popular skate park
  • Convenient location right off of I-495.
  • Lots of Racquetball courts.
  • Large private showers in the locker rooms.

Cons:

  • The building is older and more worn.
  • The pool is often very crowded because of swim teams, classes, and a large number of patrons.
  • The Fitness Center is a little cramped.
  • There is no hot tub/spa, unlike most of the other Rec Centers.
  • The saunas are very small.

Cub Run Rec Center:

Cub Run is actually one of only two Rec Centers that I have yet to visit. As a result, I don’t have as much first-hand information to give you about it. Cub Run features many aquatic activities, including large slides and a lazy river. One of the water slides is 50 feet long, fully enclosed, and exits, then reenters the building! All of this make it an excellent Vacation/Staycation destination, particularly in the Summer.

Location:

4630 Stonecroft Blvd, Chantilly, VA 20151

Hours:

Monday – Friday = 5am – 9pm (Pool = 6:30am – 9pm)

Saturday = 7am – 6pm (Pool = 9am – 6pm)

Sunday = 8am – 6pm (Pool = 9am – 6pm)

Amenities:

  • 25-meter indoor swimming pool
  • Fitness Center
  • Leisure Pool, including 50-foot slide
  • Hot Tub/Spa
  • Locker Rooms

Staycation/Vacation Activities:

As mentioned above, Cub Run features many excellent water activities for kids and families, particularly in the Summer. There is a 50-foot-long enclosed water slide that exits and then reenters the building, a leisure pool, and a regular indoor lap pool. There are also nature programs at nearby Sully Woodlands.

Pros:

  • There are lots of water and pool amenities

Cons:

  • The 25 meter lap pool is smaller than some of the other Rec Center pools.

George Washington Rec Center:

The George Washington Rec Center is one of the smallest of the Rec Centers, but this can also be a positive, as it makes the facility easy to navigate and generally less crowded. It features a smaller 25-meter pool, a nice hot tub/spa, plus locker rooms, saunas, and a small number of fitness equipment.

Location:

8426 Old Mount Vernon Road, Alexandria, VA 22309

Hours:

Monday – Thursday = 6:30am – 10:30am, 3pm – 8pm

Friday: 6:30am – 10:30am

Sunday: 1pm – 6pm

Amenities:

  • 25-meter indoor swimming pool
  • Fitness Center

  • Saunas
  • Locker Rooms

Staycation/Vacation Activities:

The best options available at this Rec Center are the 25-meter pool, hot tub, and saunas.

Pros:

  • Smaller and less crowded than the other Rec Centers
  • Great location in a quiet residential neighborhood, and close to historic Mount Vernon

Cons:

  • Not as many amenities or activities as the other Rec Centers
  • Limited hours compared to other Rec Centers.

Franconia Rec Center:

Franconia has a wealth of activities and facilities for the whole family. Inside, it has a 50-meter indoor swimming pool, an enormous hot tub/spa, and a basketball court. Outdoors, it features tennis courts, volleyball courts (with sand, which can make them a fun outdoor activity), plus a large playground for kids, picnic areas for gatherings and parties, a water park, a carousel, and a small yet well-maintained nature walk.

Amenities:

  • 50 meter indoor swimming pool
  • Fitness Center
  • Hot tub/spa
  • Saunas
  • Locker Rooms
  • Athletic Fields
  • Basketball Court
  • Tennis Courts
  • Volleyball Courts
  • Picnic Areas
  • Large Playground
  • Water Park
  • Nature Trail

Staycation/Vacation Activities:

The Rec Center offers a large number of great activities and amenities that make it an excellent Staycation location. Highlights include the 50 meter indoor pool, including high dive diving boards, the enormous indoor hot tub, and basketball court. In addition to all of this, there is a water park, carousel, large playground, picnic areas, volleyball courts with sand, and tennis courts.

Pros:

  • A large number of indoor and outdoor activities for the whole family.
  • The largest and best hot tub in the entire Rec Center.
  • Large 50 meter pool that is less busy than some of the other Rec Center pools.

Cons:

  • The pool can get very crowded in the summer, particularly with kids and families.
  • The locker rooms can get dirty, particularly during busier times.
  • The Fitness Center is not as big as some of the other Rec Centers.

Mount Vernon Rec Center:

Please note that Mount Vernon Rec Center will be completely closed for major renovations from January 1, 2023 to the beginning of 2025!

Mount Vernon Rec Center is the only Rec Center that also features a full skating rink, which can be used year-round for ice skating, ice skating lessons, hockey, and other related activities. It also features a 25-meter pool, hot tub/spa, saunas, locker rooms, and fitness center.

Location:

2017 Belle View Blvd, Alexandria, VA 22307

Hours:

Monday – Friday = 6am – 9pm (Pool = 6:30am – 9pm)

Saturday = 7am – 6pm (Pool = 9am – 6pm)

Sunday = 8am – 6pm (Pool = 9am – 6pm)

Amenities:

  • Ice Skating/Hockey Rink
  • 25-meter indoor swimming pool
  • Fitness Center
  • Hot tub/spa
  • Saunas
  • Locker Rooms

Staycation/Vacation Activities:

The ice skating rink is definitely a great activity, particularly in the Winter months, though it’s available year-round. Make sure to refer to the schedule online for the latest availability. For ice skating ticket prices, refer to the Mount Vernon Rec Center website.

Pros:

  • The Ice Skating/Hockey rink is a huge plus
  • The pool is not huge but generally is not too crowded
  • Nice location in a residential neighborhood in Alexandria

Cons:

  • Small locker rooms and shower areas.

Oak Marr Rec Center:

Oak Marr Rec Center had a major renovation a few years back, and as a result it is one of the nicest and newest looking of all the Rec Centers. It has one of the nicest and biggest pools, including a diving well with platform diving boards. It has a miniature golf course on the property. There is even a smoothie bar in the lobby.

Location:

3200 Jermantown Road, Oakton, VA 22124

Hours:

Monday – Friday = 5am – 9pm (Pool = 6:30am – 9pm)

Saturday = 7am – 6pm (Pool = 9am – 6pm)

Sunday = 8am – 6pm (Pool = 9am – 6pm)

Amenities:

  • 50-meter indoor pool
  • Hot tub/spa
  • Saunas
  • Locker Rooms
  • Fitness Rooms
  • Smoothie Bar
  • Miniature Golf

Staycation/Vacation Activities:

The miniature golf course is a great Staycation activity. The 50 meter pool is also a great feature.

Pros:

  • Sleek, modern facility, particularly compared to the other much more dated Rec Centers.
  • State-of-the-art Olympic-sized pool with springboards and platform diving boards.
  • Miniature golf and smoothie bar are nice extras

Cons:

  • It can get pretty crowded, particularly in the pool with many schools, swim teams, and classes sharing the space.
  • The locker rooms are dated and older.

Providence Rec Center:

Providence Rec Center is another of the smaller Rec Centers. Some highlights of the facility include a large number of racquetball courts, which are very popular, and the most aesthetically pleasing hot tub/spa out of all of the Rec Centers: it is a cool, multi-layer design, surrounded by plants and large windows that look out to the surrounding woodlands. There is also a network of nice trails nearby.

Location:

7525 Marc Drive, Falls Church, VA 22042

Hours:

Monday – Friday = 5am – 9pm (Pool = 6:30am – 9pm)

Saturday = 7am – 6pm (Pool = 9am – 6pm)

  • 25-meter indoor swimming pool
  • Fitness Center
  • Hot tub/spa
  • Saunas
  • Locker Rooms
  • Racquetball courts
  • Nature Trails

Staycation/Vacation Activities:

The multiple racquetball courts are an excellent way to have fun and a little friendly competition with family and friends. The hot tub is a lovely tranquil setting with multiple tiers, and is decorated with plants and large windows overlooking the nearby woods. There are also nice nature trails around the Rec Center for walking, running, or biking.

Pros:

  • The large, multi-tiered hot tub
  • Set amidst nature trails in a lovely wooded setting
  • Convenient location right off the Arlington Blvd exit of I-495
  • Racquetball courts

Cons:

  • Older, smaller building
  • Smaller, cramped Fitness Center
  • The smaller pool tends to get easilycrowded with swim teams, classes, and other patrons

South Run Rec Center:

South Run is another of the more recently renovated facilities. Though it isn’t quite as sleek as Oak Marr, it is still much more modern than many of the other more dated centers.

It features a cool curved wall design with an abundance of windows that let in a lot of light, particularly in the large, two-story fitness center.

It also features an adjacent and popular dog park, plus nearby trails for walking, running, and bicycling. South Run also boasts another bonus: Go Ape Zipline and Adventure Park is located at the Rec Center.

Location:

7550 Reservation Drive, Springfield, VA 22153

Hours:

Monday – Friday = 5am – 9pm (Pool = 6:30am – 9pm)

Saturday = 7am – 6pm (Pool = 9am – 6pm)

Sunday = 8am – 6pm (Pool = 9am – 6pm)

Amenities:

  • 25-meter indoor swimming pool
  • Hot tub/spa
  • Saunas
  • Locker Rooms
  • Two-level Fitness Center
  • Racquetball courts
  • Athletic fields
  • Dog Park
  • Go Ape Zipline and Adventure Park

Staycation/Vacation Activities:

Though it’s not technically part of the Rec Center, the Go Ape Zipline and Adventure Park is a great option for a fun and unique experience. They feature numerous packages at varying price points. The Dog Park and easy access to nearby trails are other great features.

Pros:

  • Modern, renovated facility
  • Very large, two-level fitness center, with floor to ceiling windows that look out onto the surrounding trees
  • Go Ape Zipline and Adventure Park

Cons:

  • The pool is smaller (25 meters) and gets very crowded very easily.
  • The locker rooms have not been renovated.

Spring Hill Rec Center:

This is the second of two Rec Centers (Cub Run being the other one), that I have never actually gone to. I’ll do my best to give you as much information as possible about it though. It is also one of the more recently renovated facilities.

Location:

1239 Spring Hill Road, McLean, VA 22102

Hours:

Monday – Friday = 5am – 9pm (Pool = 6:30am – 9pm)

Saturday = 7am – 6pm (Pool = 9am – 6pm)

Sunday = 8am – 6pm (Pool = 9am – 6pm)

Amenities:

  • 25-meter indoor swimming pool
  • Fitness Center
  • Hot Tub/Spa
  • Locker Rooms

Staycation/Vacation Activities:

Spring Hill has a 25-meter indoor pool for exercise and fun.

Pros:

  • Nicer, newer facility

Cons:

  • Not as many amenities as other Rec Centers.

Classes:

Drop-In Classes:

Each of the Rec Centers features a large assortment of Drop-In Classes, which are available for free for all patrons with a membership. Classes include Zumba, Yoga, Pilates, Barre, Cycle Spin, P90X, Water Exercise, Body Pump, Body Sculpting, Kettlebell Training, Boxing, Tai Chi and more. I have taken numerous classes at some of the Rec Centers, particularly Yoga, Pilates and Cycle Spin, and they have all been a great, fun, and motivating experience.

The schedules generally remain the same from month to month. Below are recent sample calendars for each Rec Center, however you should look for the latest monthly calendar, plus call in advance to ensure that the class is available. Also, please note that not all classes listed above are available at all Rec Centers. Refer to each Rec Center calendar for the classes available at that location.

Drop-In Class Schedules:

Registered Classes:

Along with Drop-In Classes, the Fairfax County Park Authority has an extensive catalog of classes that can be purchased separately. Every season, the Rec Centers issues a magazine called Park Takes, which can be mailed or emailed to you directly by signing up here. It includes literally hundreds of different classes taught at both the Rec Centers and at other Fairfax County Parks.

The magazine will typically be mailed in the middle of the preceding Season (for instance, the Winter magazine will come out around November). Then, there will be a registration period (typically in the month leading up to the next Season) during which you can register for any classes you are interested in taking.

My family and I have taken numerous classes through the Park Takes program, including Pilates, Yoga, and various cardio and weight courses. The classes cover a wide range of areas. As you’d expect, they tend to focus on nature, fitness, health and wellness.

The full Park Takes Online magazine can be found here.

Below is just a sample of some of the areas you can take classes in:

  • Aquatics
  • Camps
  • Dance
  • Equestrian
  • Farm
  • Fine Arts
  • Garden
  • Golf
  • History
  • Ice Skating
  • Martial Arts
  • Nature
  • Performing Arts

For Kids:

There are a lot of different programs, activities, and classes that are available for kids of all ages.

  • Birthday Parties: You can rent a Rec Center or Park space for birthday parties. You can purchase different party packages based on size and time of the party. You can have use of a separate room to hold the party, plus the gym. And then you can also use the pool and ice rink for centers that have those facilities.
  • Registered Classes: You can look up classes by subject or key word to find different classes available, as well as the age group that the course is appropriate for.
  • Amenities: As described above, each of the Rec Centers features many amenities that are popular with children, particularly pools (both indoor and outdoor), a skate park at Audrey Moore Rec Center, ice skating and hockey at Mount Vernon Rec Center, the Go Ape! Zip Line and Adventure Park at South Run, and Miniature Golf at Oak Marr Rec Center.
  • There are various Spring and Summer Camps at the Rec Centers that kids can attend. The 2022 Summer and Spring Camp guides can be found here. The camps are generally available for children aged 4 to 14. Camps often focus on specific areas, including:

    • Archery
    • Art
